Within our child often punishment has been used to control our child’s behaviour temporarily while we’re small or when we are in our parents’ presence, but it cannot control us now. As with all of us, outward behaviour is merely a reflection of our child within: Our needs, our hurts, our emotional states.

While the temporary ‘payoff’ of punishment for adults may be compliance, the needs behind the behaviour are never addressed and those needs merely get driven underground  often emerging later in more potentially damaging behaviours such as lying, sneaking, anger, outright rebellion, depression, aggression, and our addictions.
